  Ⅰ Analyzing the teaching material

  The reading material is from Go For it Book II A Unit 4 What’s the best movie theater? Section B (2a-2e). It is a reading material.

  Ⅱ Analyzing the students

  The students are Junior Two students and take a great interest in learning English.

  Ⅲ Teaching objectives

  ----Knowledge aims:

1.       Get the students to learn new words and phrases: magician, make up, takeseriously,come true

2.       Get the students to learn more about talent shows.

3.       Get the students to use the superlatives to make a report.

  ----Ability aims:

1.       Develop the students’ reading ability: scanning, skimming, careful reading, mind-map, chart, question and answer.

2.       Enable the students to learn more reading strategies: find the topic sentence, use the context to guess the meaning and the reference of the pronoun “that” in Para 2.

3.       Get the students to share their opinions.

  ----Emotion aims:

1.       Get the students to know everyone is good at something and try to make their dreams come true..

2.  Get the students to try to be a talented and confident person.

  Ⅳ Teaching Focus

1.       Get the students to grasp the key words and key phrases.

2.       Get the students to develop the reading skills and try to retell the passage.

3.  Get the students to give a report:Who’s got talent in my group?

  Get the students to develop the reading skills and make a report with superlatives.

  ( Before-reading )

  Step One :Warming up

  1.Use the first letter of Eight words to lead in “talented”.(If you truly love doing something, you will be able to keep practicing. And your love will make it easy for you to succeed. Naturally, you will be terrific at something. You enjoy doing it and you will be different because of your efforts. That is what “talented” means in my mind.

  2.Divide the whole class into 8 groups and choose a letter from “talented”. So we have Group T,A,L,E,N,Pink T,Pink E and D.Work in groups to achieve their tasks.

  3. Clear learning objectives: reading strategies, retelling , report and act.

  4. Brainstorming: What are you talented in? Can you sing? Can you dance? If you are talented in singing or dancing, you can do something special.

  5. Watch a video: A piece of America’s Got Talent. What other talent shows do you know? Show some pictures of other talent shows and tell we are going to read a passage about talent shows.

  ( While-reading )

  Step Two: Look through the passage and match the topic sentence for each para.(Scanning)

   Look through and try to match the topic sentence for each para. Try to tell the reason.

  Step Three: Skim Para 1.

  Skim Para 1 and try to answer: How are talent shows getting now? Which three talent shows are mentioned? Let students read answers together.

  Step Four: Read Para 2 carefully and try to answer: What do talent shows have in common? Who decides the winner?

  1. Read carefully and answer the first question.

  2. What is “magician”? Use a magic show to explain the meaning of “magician”.

  3. Pair work: Who else do they try to look for?

  4. Read the mind map together.

  5.What does “that” in the para mean? Find out the sentence it stands for.

  Step Five: Read Para 3 carefully and fill in the chart.

   1. Why do people like talent shows? Why don’t people like talent shows?

   2. Use the context to guess the meaning of new phrases: make up; take---seriously

   3. Pair work: What do you think of talent shows? Why do we need talent?( 1st PK )

  Step Six: Read the whole passage again and tell True or False.

  ( After-reading )

  Step Seven: Have a summary and try to retell the passage. (2nd PK)

   Use the mind map to help students retell the passage. To encourage more students to retell the passage, let students who put up hands stand up to retell the passage.

  Step Eight: Group work: Who’s got talent in your group?( last PK)

   1. Discuss in groups and try to fill in the chart. Try to use the superlatives. A group member make a report about all members’ talents. The others show their talents with their body languages. If their talents are not easy to show, they also can say something about their talents.

   2. Groups show their talents.

  Step Nine: Enjoy a poem.

 Enjoy a poem: Follow Your Own Course. The poem encourages people to be more talented and through hard work they can be what they want to be. 

  Step Ten: Summary

 1. Everyone is good at something. I hope you can be the most truthful, the most active, the most lovely, the most energetic, the nicest, the most thankful, the most enjoyable, and the most different. So I hope you can be the most talented.

 2. Group A and E are the winners. Congratulations.

  Step Eleven: Homework

 1. Read the passage again after class, then try to retell it.

 2. Finish your writing “Who’s got talent in my group”..

  Step Twelve: Ending

 Group leaders show the letters of “talented” in front of students. Class is over.
